Review: qBittorrent Torrent Client

Posted by Rhiannon

If you plan on torrenting files, you need a client with which to do so. There are dozens on the market, some paid, some free. Others are feature-heavy while some have just the basics. A few are recent additions to the market while others have been around nearly as long as torrenting. The qBittorrent torrent client is one of those that has been around for years and years, and it’s quite popular because of it. If you’ve stumbled across qBittorrent and are planning on trying it out, check out our review first:

  • Pros and cons
  • Other tips

Device Compatibility

Users of almost any computer platform can make use of the qBittorrent torrent client. It is available for download on Windows, MacOS, and Linux devices, as well the FreeBSD operating system. However, the software does not currently have mobile functionality.

Price

qBittorent is developed entirely by volunteers as an open-source software. Because of this, the client is free to download and use and doesn’t even include ads. However, the official website does mention that a donation to keep the project running would be gratefully accepted.

Features

Although qBittorrent is free, that doesn’t mean it skimps on features. It has all of what’s needed for torrenting, including:

  • Integrated torrent search engine
  • Media player
  • P2P encryption
  • Download prioritization
  • Users can pick download files within a torrent

Set Up Guide

To download and install the qBittorrent torrent client on your device, just follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the qBittorrent website.
  2. Click the download header.
  3. Choose the download for your device.
  4. Follow the prompts on your device.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Simple user interface
  • Search function
  • Includes most important features
  • No ads
  • Resource-light

Cons

  • Somewhat outdated design
  • No plug ins

Other Tips

Although qBittorrent offers encryption for your connection, you should add an extra layer of security to your torrenting activities. The best way to do this is to use a virtual private network. A VPN will reroute your activity through their servers and change your IP address so your activity will be anonymous and hidden from prying eyes.
