3 Ways to Hide Your IP Address When Surfing the Internet
Posted by kevin
Today, governments and corporations are looking at every way available to keep their eyes on the public. This means that whatever we do, from walking down the street to even accessing the internet, there will always be something about our activities that can be tracked. When you connect to the internet, your identity is tracked through your IP address. This may or may not be surprising to you, but if you want to ensure your identity is genuinely hidden when you go online, you will need to hide your IP address.
So, how do you hide your IP address? Here are three methods you can try:
- Use Tor
- Try a proxy browser
- Connect to a VPN
Use Tor
If you have ever looked for ways to anonymously surf the internet, you may have run into something called “Tor.” Tor is a browser network that utilizes servers set up by volunteers to create an untraceable online network. While how it works is quite complicated, it can easily be summarized like this:
Typically, your connection and activity is sent directly to your internet service provider when using the internet. In this case, your ISP can see and store all of your activity online. With Tor, your connection is sent to different locations, called nodes, across the network. This makes it extremely tough for anyone to track your connection.
While this is advantageous when accessing the internet privately, it does have its downsides. It has become the focus of many law enforcement agencies because of all the illegal activities it has notoriously facilitated. Many websites also do not allow connections made by Tor because of its reputation. In addition, because your activity must pass through so many connections, Tor may slow your browsing significantly.
Use a Proxy Browser
If you just want to hide your IP address (rather than protecting your connection), you can use a proxy browser rather than Tor. You can do this by accessing a proxy browser and listing the website you want to view. From there, the proxy will open up a new window that will allow you to access the internet without your real IP being revealed.
The main downside of using a proxy browser is that, while it hides your IP address, it does not necessarily protect your connection. This means that snoops can still track your activity online.
Use a Virtual Private Network
A VPN is the best option for full security online. VPNs reroute your traffic through different servers to hide your IP address. In addition VPNs also encrypt your activity. This means that when you go online, your IP address is hidden and replaced with a fake IP address, and your activities are protected from prying eyes.
If you consider the other benefits of VPNs, such as their ability to bypass region-locked content, it becomes clear that this solution has become the best for surfing the internet safely. Not only that, VPNs have also become the standard for online security.
Conclusion
Staying anonymous online is becoming increasingly more challenging. Fortunately, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy digital anonymity. Tor, proxies, and VPNs are all suitable options, although VPNs are the most robust choice for complete anonymity and security.
