Day 1 of Holiday Privacy: Shop With a VPN
Virtual private networks, or VPNs, are crucial digital tools to maintain your privacy online. They establish a secure connection with all the websites you visit (even if the website itself isn’t secure), hide your browsing activity from prying eyes, and mask or change your IP address so even your internet service provider doesn’t know what you do on the internet. When you shop with a VPN, it also protects your credit card information from falling into the hands of hackers. This is important year-round in addition to during the holidays. VPNs also prevent cookies and search history from being saved on your devices. This way, any family members who share your computer or phone don’t accidentally spoil their holiday gifts.
In addition, a VPN can help you save money on holiday purchases. Many websites adjust their prices based on the location displayed in your IP address, meaning affluent areas of the world may be charged higher prices on goods and services, including on air travel and hotel accommodations (so take note, holiday travellers). By changing your IP address with a VPN, you can shop around for the best deal.
Come back tomorrow for another holiday privacy tip!
